YMI Musician Spotlight: Tegan and Sara

The Canadian, indie pop rock, identical twin duo, Tegan and Sara have been blowing our minds with their musical genius since 1998 and they’re not done yet. They’ve been touring since 2000 and recently released the dates of their UK & European tour on their website AND their sixth full-length album, Sainthood, will be released on October 27th. We’re seriously counting down the hours. The album addresses secular themes of devotion, delusion, and exemplary behavior in the pursuit of love and relationships. It is inspired by emotional longing and the quiet actions we hope may be noticed by the objects of our affection, Sainthood is about obsession with romantic ideals. (Sigh) We’re waiting with bated breath!

The talented double act has a style all their own from their asymmetrical haircuts to graphic tees to some their hot denim jeans. Get their indie digs and show some love with our Tegan and Sara inspired look.

Tegan&Sara

Twilight’s Christian Serratos Drops By YMI

Twilight’s sweetheart, Christian Serratos, stopped by our YMI office in Los Angeles and raided the coveted YMI closet! She totally made out, taking home a ton of really cute jackets and jeans. She’s been busy filming The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Eclipse where she plays Angela Weber, Bella Swan’s (Kristen Stewart) best (completely human) friend. We’re so happy she found time to come by and say hi!

IMG_3753_web

Here she is looking completely gorgeous and sassy in her Destroyed Skinnies and YMI t-shirt. Such a great fit, huh?

necklace

Not only is Christian an awesome actress, ice skater, singer and songwriter  - she also makes beautiful jewelry with her mom! Check out her gorgeous turquoise beaded cross necklace that goes perfectly with some YMI denim :)

IMG_3745_web

We are excited to finally reveal our newest and definitely our hottest skinny jean, EXTREME by YMI!  Doesn’t Christian look great in them? They have a special loose weave to make them form to your body and fit like a glove and treated with a potassium wash to give them that EXTREME look. We promise you’ll never find any jeans that fit like these. But you’ll have to wait just a little bit longer to get them – the jeans hit the racks in late November. I know…we’re counting down the days too!

Watch this cute clip of Christian in YMI’s Extreme Jeans. Oh and Happy Belated Birthday, Christian (she turned 19 on Sept 21!!!).

The Next Big Thing: Rainy Day Edition

As of today, the summer is officially over. We in New York are reluctant to face the gray stormy weather, but you lucky ducks in southern California and other warm areas get to enjoy the sunshine for a while longer. (Not that we’re bitter or anything.)

Even though we’re sad, we must force ourselves to wipe our tears away because dressing for stormy weather can be so fun. We put together our ideal rainy day outfit using items from some of our favorite Etsy sellers. Enjoy The Next Big Thing: Rainy Day Edition.

When the elements get rough, it’s time to bust out a comfy coat. Our new gray trench is not only totally cute and fleecey, but it’ll protect you from rain and wind! Also? It’s only $44.00. Awesome!

dress

Unless you’re into flashing, you should probably wear something under that trench coat. We love wearing dresses in the rain, and this navy dress by Ahpeele seems perfect for stormy weather. If you can’t beat those rain clouds, you might as well join them right? This adorable boatneck dress is equipped with pockets which gives it an A+ in our book. AdAm and Hiromi, the awesome team behind Ahpeele, first met during a Duck tour around Boston and it was love at first sight! They design and print clothes with Tokyo-influenced style.

purse

Get lost in the clouds with this fluffy clutch by Recycled Rings. Made from an antique nickel purse frame and “hand picked clouds from the sky,” this little clutch is the perfect place to save your pennies for a rainy day. Designer Michelle hails from Chicago and is a part-time art therapist. We totally dig her jewelry and accessories that are made from recycled items.

necklace

Of course after the rain you get the best part…. The rainbow! To brighten up your story weather ensemble, we suggest this adorable Here Comes the Sun necklace by MIXKO. Designers Nahoko Koyama and Alexander Garnett formed a partnership to create stylish and practical products that inspire happiness. This cute necklace definitely makes us smile.

Now you’re ready to start singin’ in the rain!

Emmy Fashion

There were a ton of fabulous fashions spotted at last nights Emmy Awards. Some celebs totally nailed their red carpet looks and wowed us with amazing gowns. And of course, there were some epic failures.

Here’s some of our faves:

goodemmyfashion

Blake Lively looked amazing in her red Versace dress. Not many women can pull off such a showy gown, but Blake’s rockin’ bod was perfect to pull off this frock. She was definitely the stand out of the evening – everything from her hair to the color of her gown made this gossip girl shine above the rest.

Drew Barrymore’s Monique Lhuillier gown was absolutely fabulous. The Grey Gardens star opted for a pastel peach color that looked great against her pale skin. Her glamorous look was perfect for the evening. We’re sure Little Eddie would approve.

Julia Louis Dreyfus took it up a notch with her teal Vera Wang gown. Looks like Old Christine’s still got some tricks up her sleeve! She’s obviously in great shape and the dress was a great choice for her body.

And here are some of the dresses we could have done without:

bademmyfashion

Shar Jackson appeared to have mosquitoes pinned to her dress. We thought this was the Emmys, not science class. Fail.

Sarah Silverman – we love you girl, but what the heck is this frock? If a bad 80’s prom dress got together with window curtains and had a baby, it would be this gown. We’re not totally sure but we suspect Sarah may have been playing a joke on us here – a joke that made us laugh at her, not with her.

Padma Lakshmi is so beautiful. It’s a shame she had to muck things up with this hideous dress. It looked like flowers were growing out of her stomach, which is sort of magical but not so fashionable. Padma, please pack your gown and go.

Do you agree with our picks for best and worst dress? Who wore your favorite gown of the evening?

Next Big Thing: Steampunk Edition

On 9.09.09 Focus Features premiered “9” the movie, an animated sci-fi/action film directed by Shane Acker and produced by Mr. Tim Burton himself. The film takes place during a period of economic decline and the government of a totalitarian state commissions  scientists to research ways for the nation to prosper. A scientist creates machines to solve the country’s problems but end up snapping under pressure and turning on humanity. During this time, that same scientist creates a mysterious talisman and a set of nine numbered ragdoll-like “stitchpunks,” hoping they will preserve humanity’s legacy and allow life to continue. The film’s aesthetic is simply fantastic in a dark, industrial, “steampunk” kind-a-way and has inspired today’s Next Big Thing.  Plus we just love introducing you to up-and-coming designers!

jeans

YMI’s Destroyed Black Skinny Jeans are super tough looking and start the look off perfectly.

top

Sandmaiden’s charcoal colored circular wrap with black frog closures certainly fits the theme and is still super feminine. This busy mom wants to share the magical comfy-ness of loungewear that’s so stylish it can be worn anywhere! Nicely done.

necklace

What could be more steampunk than this vintage partial watch movement with an adorable skull and cross bones made by The Steampunk Trunk? The gal behind these Victorian fashions was totally made to live the steampunk life. She’s a wife and mom of 3 who runs the Trunk as a one woman show AND she is awesome enough to share her love of vintage with us!

clutch

Now, you must have something to store all of your old-timey gadgets and gears in (or just your digi-cam), so we bring to you this mini art quilt wristlet clutch (say that 10 times fast!) from Louisiana artist, Ivan and Lucy.  The sand colored clutch features vintage art pieces, buttons, Czech alphabet beads and imported Japanese fabrics. When all these elements combine you have an awesome display of creativity and fashion!

Now that you’re dressed to absolute steampunk perfection – check out the trailer for Focus Features, “9” the movie and sport your new look to the theater!

VMA Fashion

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know the MTV Video Music Awards were last night. Yeah yeah, music is important, but let’s take a look at some of last night’s fashions, shall we?

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift was definitely the woman of the evening. Even Kanye could not steal her thunder! Her dress looked a bit heavy, probably because it was dripping with crystals. It’s a little over-kill for our taste and is a bit too reminiscent of a disco ball. It’s a good thing she changed into that red frock before her performance on the New York subway.

Amber Rose

Excuse me, Amber Rose? Did you maybe want to check out the ticket of your event to remind yourself that you were headed to the VMA’s instead of Snake-a-palooza? We’re all about originality, but this is just Crazytown.

Lady Gaga

And SPEAKING of Crazytown – thanks for this Lady GaGa. You never cease to amaze us.

Amanda Bynes

Dear Amanda Bynes,

Have you not learned from Tara Reid’s mistakes? This was a nip-slip waiting to happen.

Xo

-YMI

Shakira

Did you guys know that Baby Spice was invited to this year’s VMAs? Oh sorry Shakira, that’s just you. Nice boots.

Pink

Hold up… this dress looks a little familiar. Pink, you totes called Shakira and planned this the night before, didn’t you? Anyway, definitely wore it better.

Lauren Conrad

And last but not least… award for best dress goes to the former Hills resident and fashion expert, Lauren Conrad. Kristin C. might be taking you’re place on MTV, but you’ve still got it L.C!

All in all, it was quite a night! There were obviously some interesting red carpet choices, and you know we never balk at the chance to judge fashion. Do you want to do a little judging of your own? Head over to our Facebook page and help us choose our new winter ad image for a chance to win free jeans!

Fashion’s Night Out NYC

Last night the world celebrated Fashion’s Night Out. Over 700 stores including flagships, tiny boutiques, massive department stores, and mainstream chains, and niche luxury names kept their doors open late to celebrate fashion. Several cities around the globe participated in the event including London, Milan, Paris, and of course, NYC! The YMI bloggers gallivanted around the Big Apple’s celebration all night long. We stopped off at several locations including Versace, Ralph Lauren and Cynthia Rowley! Check out some of the photos we snapped while at the star-studded event.

ciara

Musical artist Ciara showed off her gold strapless dress while posing for the cameras and signing autographs.

leigh

Greg Krelenstein and Leigh Lezark of The Misshapes were spinning tunes all night.

hana

Supermodel, Hana Soukupova looked amazing in her rocker-esque dress.

photo

Live models stood perfectly still in the hottest fashions.

blake

Gossip Girl and style maven, Blake Lively, popped into Ralph Lauren just for a minute.

Nacho

Actress Camilla Belle  and Polo hunk, Nacho Figueras paused for a photo opp.

Crowd

The crowds raged all night long!

All in all, it was a great night. FNO09 all the way baby!! Did you make it out to Fashion’s Night Out?

The Next Big Thing: Get Scrappy

When thinking about Fall essentials, we’ve been getting really wrapped up in the idea of scrappy/destroyed/recycled materials. It’s fun to take things that are ripped up and combine them to make a well-put-together look. We pulled together some cool up-cycled clothes from up-and-coming designers and combined them with our new destroyed skinnys to bring you today’s Next Big Thing feature.

P273923-PR-T15_2

Start your scrappy look off right with our new destroyed skinny jeans. They’re super sexy and comfortable, and at under $50, they won’t put a big dent in your pocketbook!

il_430xN.89303401

Get cozy in Dad’s hand-me-down reconstructed button-up by PeekoApparel. Brook, the master mind behind the whole operation, enjoys hunting through thrift stores and finding materials to transform into something playful and wearable. We think the kimono style sleeves and military-esque buttons are so cute and def’ in right now!

il_430xN.86571597

Next up is this totally eye catching shoelace necklace from the queen of recycled fashions, Supayana. She spends one day a week scouring thrift stores looking for the best quality fabrics and garments because she is committed to creating less waste whenever possible – whoa. And get this, because she got all those shoelaces for free, she’s donating all of the proceeds to a no-kill animal shelter – double whoa!

il_430xN.80497307

Ok, now it’s really time to get scrappy and place this funky ring on your finger. Because times are tough, CEK Custom Designs is getting creative with their jewelry making. They’ve constructed this ring from sterling silver 16 gauge wire scraps that were left over from a previous bracelet. The pieces are wrapped and hammered into this unique design and then oxidized for a dramatic look. We simply adore this look and it can even be great for a guy (ehem, gift idea!)

So, just because something is second hand and shredded definitely does not mean it can’t be incredibly chic and smart! We love up-cycled garments and we love up-and-coming designers – so this outfit makes perfect sense to us and the environment!

The Next Big Thing: Taylor Jacobson

Do you watch the Rachel Zoe Project on Bravo? If not, you must get to a TV pronto! We heart the clothes worn on the show… not by Miss Zoe, but by her delightfully bitchy “associate” Taylor Jacobson. We love Taylor’s sassy attitude, and her style is bananas!

TaylorJacobson

Sure, Tay can get cranky, but her impeccable fashion sense makes her invaluable to Rachel and a style icon for us modern gals. Not sure how to get her tough-girl look? Read on… we’ll give you some style hints and introduce you to some cool up-and-coming designers.

taylorpants

While Taylor’s J Brand skinnies may hurt your wallet at a whopping range of $158-$187, our YMI black skinny jeans will make you look rockin’ AND feel quite economically responsible at just $38.00!!  And if you REALLY want to save big, become our fan on Facebook and head to the Fall Sale tab to get a 30% off discount code! (This week only.)

taylorshirt

Top those dark skinnies off with this polka dotted halter made by Pinar Eris tops off this Taylor’s look from last night’s episode. Pinar Eris’s pieces are fun to wear, a bit avant –garde, expressive and definitely feminine – like wearable pieces of art!

Taylorpurse

Next, get slouchy with this new “Dark Horse” leather bag made of soft black cow hide, brass hardware, fully lined with black satin and equipped with short and long shoulder strap. Ultra-chic yet large enough transport all of your fashion needs. Kelly Reid, native New Zealander turned New Yorker, graduated with a degree in fashion then started the unique line, REID DAMNIT (thank goodness for us!)

TaylorBracelet

Last but not least, Chain Chain Chained’s awesome vintage mesh buckle bracelet will give your writs that certain glow that grabs attention and creates a bit of  jealousy ;) You can wear one or as many as you want to get Taylor’s shimmery layered look.

Can’t get enough Taylor? Watch her next Monday on the Rachael Zoe Project and jot down some style notes or just copy off of ours!
