Trendspotting: Ripped Skinnies

Call us crazy, but we think we may have spotted a little trend…

celebrippedjeans

Ripped jeans anyone?? Whether it’s RiRi, Li-Lo or Ashley Olsen, all the stars seem to be digging destroyed denim these days. Shredded denim is the new boyfriend jeans ya’ll! You’ll probably want to get yourself a pair for fall ASAP.

Do you have $100 to blow on your ripped skinnies? If so, good for you… we sure don’t. We’d prefer to save our pretty pennies for a rainy day and get some awesome ripped jeans for cheap.

ymirippedjeans

If you haven’t seen yet, we just got some super hot ripped skinnies a few days ago, and they’re already selling like hotcakes. You can get yourself a pair in black or dark blue for less than $50 in our online shop.

shirtandscarf

And if you’re wondering what to wear these with, we recommend a loose-fitting t-shirt and a long chunky scarf.

Now you’re ready to get ripped.

Partying With Nylon

We love a good party, especially when celebrities are involved. The other night, we celebrated the launch of Nylon Magazine’s annual Fall TV issue at the Sky Bar in the Mondrian Hotel. (Apparently we can’t get enough Mondrian in our lives!)

We hung out with some cool people…

NylonPartyPics

Ya know, no big whoop. Just the cast True Blood, Entourage, The Hills and 90210. Of course, the party wouldn’t be complete without our awesome jeans. We were giving them away to our favorite peeps, and it was no surprise that most of the ladies went for the destroyed dark wash skinny jeans.  There were some other favorites too.

Want to look like the stars? Head to our shop to get your hands on the most popular jeans from the party.

The Next Big Thing: Mondrian Mania

It’s time to get squared away ready for Fall with a totally unique Mondrian inspired outfit!  In late 1919, Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, became renowned for his grid-based paintings using three primary colors. His paintings express general beauty and are still highly influential in abstract cubism. Check out our picks from up-and-coming independent designers found on Esty that we love almost as much as Mr. Mondrian himself!

twill

Cube it up with YMI’s Skinny Twill pants in grey plaid to get things started.

blue top

Continue the grid effect with this killer 2.pac top by Joodito. The Boston native who calls herself a “retro futurist” makes tops and scarves from salvaged materials. All of her garments are one of a kind, and are born from experimental methods. Seriously… we think we’re in love.

ring

Accessorize perfectly with this Mondrian inspired retro ring by New Zealand designer, lrjewellery.  While studying jewelry making in NZ, she discovered eye-catching results when transforming acrylic and resin into fabulously fashionable trinkets. In fact, this exact ring has been published in art books and she was even commissioned by the Prime Minister of NZ to make a custom pair of Mondrian earrings and ring!

yellow clutch

Give this artfully minded outfit a pop of primary color with this vibrant yellow clutch from tenthstreetsaks. Made of soft vinyl and sewn to give a 3D effect, at just $20 it’s such a steal that makes the perfect statement…I’m HOT!

Now, channel your inner Mondrian and rock this outfit like its 1919…er, I mean Fall 2009!

Project Runway: Episode 1 Recap

After waiting for what seemed like years, Project Runway finally made its triumphant return last night.  It’s got a new network and a new city, but it looks pretty much the same.  It was kinda weird to watch the designers make outfits for last year’s Emmy Awards, but hey, we’ll take what we can get!

We’re anxious to break down the runway looks, but first, let’s get to know some of the cast members.  The award for biggest drama queen goes to Johnny the ex-drug addict for his cry-baby breakdown.  If Project Runway doesn’t work out, he’s always got A&E’s Intervention.  While Johnny’s meltdown was utterly ridiculous and ultimately pointless, it did provide for a “heartwarming” Tim Gunn moment…

JohnnyRunway

We also have some gentlemen contestants with notable hair.  We’re digging Malvin’s half-mullet haircut and his Michael Jackson-esque quality.

Malvin

Gotta keep the spirit alive! Other contestants’ hairdos were not as impressive.  Holy crap Nicolas… or shall we call you “the Feathered Prince” – have you washed your stringy locks this decade?

Nicolas

And hey… what’s the deal with that creepy lady from Transylvania?

Gordana

Gordana Dracula sure seemed like the requisite ‘get kicked off in week one’ type, but alas she remains.

After we got to know everybody, the designers were whisked off to Mood to get their fabric. After everyone got their materials, they headed to their work space to… make it work. Some of the gowns were amazing, some were hideous, and others were… barely there.

The guest judge this week was the lovely Lindsay Lohan.  She’s looking a little worse for wear. It’s weird seeing Lindsay sit next to Heidi because you can’t really tell who’s older.

LindsayRunway

How did Lindsay Lohan go from 13 to 35 so quickly? It looks like the Herbie days are over.  Oh well. On to the judging!

The Good:

As we predicted, Christopher is already doing well. He won the first challenge with a funky-looking dress for the VMAs.  Although our personal favorite dress was designed by Irina. It was elegant and feminine and the way it glided down the runway was stunning! Maybe the dress was inspired by her cute little poodle.  It’s the same color anyway.

Irina

The Bad:

Qristyl

Oh Qristyl… the spelling of your name is just as problematic as your gown. We’re just gonna call you Big Q from here on out, cool? We really thought her dress looked like a hastily thrown together composite of clip art from Windows 95. Vintage inspiration often works, but we’re afraid you’ll have to try better next time, Big Q.

The Unacceptable:

Ari

That disgusting soccer ball thing?

Heidi

Ooopsiedaisy. Ari had some very special ideas in that wackadoo head of hers… maybe by the next decade, the rest of us will catch up with her. Until then, Auf Wiedersehen!!

We’re pretty excited to watch the rest of Project Runway 2008 … er. 2009.  What did you think of the first episode?

The Next Big Thing: Madonna Edition

Our favorite Material Girl turned 51 this weekend and brought her birthday in with a bang at the trendy London club Volstead. It’s hard to believe that the iconic pop singer is more than half a century old. One thing is for sure, Madonna has definitely displayed some epic fashion choices throughout her career.

In honor of Madge’s b-day, we picked some up and coming designers to create a modern version of her outfit from Desperately Seeking Susan.

Next, express yourself by putting on black lacy top and layering it with a cool blazer like this one by Quillinan. The Australian designer is currently based in Peru and has used scraps of local materials to create her line of clothes. The Rag and Bone collection is truly a piece of art – it was displayed in a gallery before going up for sale on Etsy

il_430xN.85197958

Also? You’ll definitely need to put a big bow on your head ASAP. We cherish this Minnie Bow in grey. We’ll openly admit it… we have a total girl crush on designer Yokoo. The Atlanta native is always knitting up a storm to bring you killer scarves, headbands and bags. Her unique sense of style, amazing pictures, and amazing knit chains make her one of our all-time favorite Etsy sellers.

Let’s move to the next item on the Madonna must-have checklist. Copious amounts of ridiculously awesome jewelry? Check! We can definitely justify our love for Elizaveta’s outrageous accessories. Each one of her of her eccentric necklaces is playful, creative and magical. Check ‘em out now!

You’ll obviously need some cool gloves to make your Madonna look complete. Open your heart to these fingerless crocheted gloves by The Sparkling Cocktail. Designer Karen lives in Brooklyn, NY where she creates cute feminine accessories and dresses.

Now you’re ready to strike a pose. There’s nothing to it (except these killer accessories and clothes!)

Let’s finally all just admit to ourselves that school is pretty much right around the corner (insert sad face here) and we know you’re armed with a basic jean, but now it’s time for the YMI’s Friday jean! YMI designers took the classic bootcut jean and twisted it with an amazing blue swirl wash that you will absolutely love to wear. And don’t’ worry, we won’t judge if you decide to wear them all weekend. Just pair them with your classic American Apparel deep V-Neck and a beautiful sterling silver flower pendant with a burnt orange sapphire handmade by Brooklyn native, Katrina Lapenne and you’re totally set!

Kim Caldwell Hosts P.Diddy’s StarMaker!

StarMaker Image

Sean “P. Diddy” Combs seems to be cranking out music megastars like a toy factory. His newest MTV show, P. Diddy’s StarMaker, will be hosted by our very own Kimberly Caldwell! Here’s what Kim has to say about working with P. Diddy:

“I cannot wait for everyone to get to see my new MTV show ‘P. Diddy’s StarMaker’!! I had such a blast hosting the show: the talent is amazing, the judges are all icons in the industry and how could I possibly complain about having P.Diddy as my boss???? So cool! Definitely tune in for the talent, stay for the drama, and — it’s Diddy — so you know there’s going to be some surprises!”

P. Diddy’s StarMaker premieres this Sunday, August 16 at 10pm ET. Watch as 14 aspiring artists duke it out for an exclusive recording contract for Diddy’s Bad Boy Records and a career launch supervised by Diddy himself. These contestants are in for a grueling reality check from a team of industry judges including performer Rodney “Dark Child” Jerkins, music industry executive Tamara Conniff and choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson.

Check out P.Diddy’s StarMaker trailer below. Like Kim says, there will be plenty of surprises so don’t miss the show and all the behind-the-scene drama.
