We simply adore a tea party, especially when the Mad Hatter is involved! Have you seen the new images from Tim Burton’s upcoming take on Alice in Wonderland? Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter plays the Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway will be the White Queen.

A very merry un-birthday to us! We couldn’t be more excited about this film – if anyone has the ability to make a cool, creepy version of our favorite childhood classic, it’s good old Mr. Burton. This take seems to have a refreshing blast of girl power! 17 year-old Alice goes to a party at a Victorian estate and discovers she’s about to be proposed to in front of several snotty guests. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole, only to end up in Wonderland. Even though she was there 10 years earlier, she doesn’t remember a thing.

In honor of this film which is slated to hit theaters in March of 2010, we’re going to have a tea party. Of course, it’s important to select the proper outfit when planning to sip tea from fine china. Check out our modern take on a classic tea party frock.

Everyone knows it’s important to look prim and proper when delighting your taste buds with earl grey. These white skinny jeans are the new bustle skirt! Classy and modern, these jeans will start your tea party off right. But be careful ladies! Napkins on laps please – you don’t want any unsightly spill stains.

To obtain maximum classiness, it’s important to lift one’s pinky finger while sipping tea. Why not do it in style with this blue calcite ring by Emily Kuvin? Hailing from Boston, the former lawyer now spends her days making jewelry with semi-precious stones. We think they’re just splendid.

And finally, you’ll need a stunning headpiece. Make the Mad Hatter jealous with this Yellow Martini Cocktail hair fascinator by Parlene. This Euro-obsessed designer resides in southern California, but she left her heart in Paris. Her hair pieces are the perfect accessory to add some oomph to a classic cocktail dress.

Surely you remember those famous lines from everyone’s favorite mermaid, right?

Just like Ariel, we’re pretty into neat stuff. Also? We heart mermaids. That’s why we’re heading out to the annual Mermaid Parade this Saturday! If you live in the New York City area, you should definitely meet us there. This is one of the best summer events in NYC. Basically, a bunch of people dress up as mermaids (Or mermen! C’mon fellas. You don’t have to feel left out) and march through Coney Island. There are floats, bands, and sea creatures galore. And seriously, do you really want to miss this?

Didn’t think so. In anticipation of the event, this week’s Next Big Thing is inspired by mermaids. Hooray!

Begin your fishy fashion with YMI’s skinny jeans in spearmint. They’re super cute and they’re on sale for $20 right now – we’re not kidding.

Top off those skinnys with this Rainbow Fish T-shirt by ARThiel. ARThiel is a proud New Orleans resident who makes clothes from upcycled materials. She cut scales out of many different shirts and sewed them to this shirt to make it aquatic-chic! We love it.

And now it’s time to bust out the accessories. We’re totally obsessed with this sterling silver mermaid ring by Anomaly Jewelry. Hand carved from wax, this ring is truly a sea water soiree – its details feature starfish, seahorses and anchors. Artist Karen Yost, an NYC artist uses the slogan “Never trendy, always in style.” We can dig it.

Finally, make your ears pretty with these Double Shell Earrings by Palleiko Designs. Designer Heather studied metalsmithing and jewelry design at the University of the Arts in Philly. We’re glad to see that degree paid off – her jewelry is amazing!

It’s time for another edition of The Next Big Thing, where YMI finds the coolest stuff from up and coming designers and creates a fabulous outfit. This week’s theme is flower power. We were a little inspired by the upcoming Demetri Martin film Taking Woodstock. Have you seen the trailer yet? This film looks amazing!

Peace love and happiness ya’ll! And on that note, let’s get down to the nitty gritty hippie action.

Get into the 60’s groove by starting with a pair of YMI flares.

Pair those ultra-cool retro jeans with this flowery silk-screened shirt by Kimm of Kimmchi.  Kimm is based in New York City and is inspired by Art Nouveau and the ornamentation of India. This queen of crafts also heads up the {NewNew}Blog – a place where craftsmen from New York City converge to showcase their awesome creations.

Next, you’ll want to accessorize. Nothing says flower power like this awesome Lucite flower ring by Debbie of The Brass Hussy. Debbie makes vintage style jewelry using brass, gemstones and glass, and we love all of her creations. The Indiana native loves figuring out how things work and celebrating National Donut Day. (Hey – so do we!)

Finally, complete your flower power look with this stunning headband by Naomi, the designer behind Taza. We simply adore these headbands, which are handmade with trimming and elastic bands. Naomi recently moved from NYC to DC with her husband, where she is continuing her quest to find the perfect burger. This Juilliard graduate has a killer fashion sense and a weakness for cupcakes.
